Don’t Be a Runaway

By Songbird

Our babies grow up so fast

As some have to sell their ass

Just for the extra or to make cash

As others are thrown into the trash

Forgotten memories that don’t last

So don’t be a runaway

Sleeping in the underpass

Wandering these streets

Having to eat out of the trash

Because see I saw your face on the milk carton

And can’t believe that you’re on the streets

Now starving, as the news sends out alert tweets

While you’re bargaining just for something to eat

Selling your Doc Martens right off your feet

Now darling you’re all alone wandering these streets

So don’t be a runaway

Sleeping in the underpass

Wandering these streets

Having to eat out of the trash

See she’s tired of her step dad

Sneaking into her bedroom at night

And leaving her manhandled

So she sneaks out at the first break of daylight

Now she’s on the streets where she panhandles

While all along she is knocked up, hopped up

And probably is gonna get locked up tonight

As the only way she can survive is to vandalize

Just to stay warm and get something to eat

As it’s another cold night living out on these streets

So don’t be a runaway

Sleeping in the underpass

Wandering these streets

Having to eat out of the trash

So if you runaway

Know someone is gonna weep

And plead for you to stay

Because this homeless girl

She is now just a piece of meat

For all these creeps

As she wanders these streets all alone

Without a place or a home to sleep

As she’s just another missing face

So don’t be a runaway

Sleeping in the underpass

Wandering these streets

Having to eat out of the trash

As the park last night is where she slept

Alone in the dark as her mama wept

So if you runaway

Know someone is gonna weep

And plead for you to stay

So don’t be a runaway

Sleeping in the underpass

Wandering these streets

Having to eat out of the trash
